With more than 200 research teams in neuroscience and cognition, the DIM C-BRAINS brings together the driving forces of the Île-de-France region with the support of 19 associations (patient associations, science education associations, etc.), around forty companies and venture capital groups bring together researchers and industry.
DIM C-BRAINS
Thanks to major financial support from the Île-de-France Region (€12.5M over 2022-2026), the DIM C-BRAINS is focusing on 3 main scientific areas (“genomics, human cells, reprogramming and neuro-organoids”; “quantitative approaches to the exploration of behaviour and cognition”; “neural networks, modelling and artificial intelligence”) as well as 2 networks of technological platforms focusing on organoids and human cells on the one hand and the exploration of human and animal cognition on the other.
Among the many scientific and technological revolutions underway, the DIM C-BRAINS is particularly keen to promote the use of organoids within the Île-de-France community: this revolutionary technology is based on stem cells obtained from a blood or skin sample which is retransformed into stem cells to recreate a mini-organ (brain, spinal cord, retina, etc.). In particular, this approach makes it possible to reproduce in vitro the development process of a hereditary disease, for example to screen molecules on these human mini-organs to develop a targeted therapy. The first treatments are currently being developed. Similarly, the DIM C-BRAINS promotes the opening up to society of cutting-edge research in cognitive sciences, computational neuroscience and AI.
Each year, the DIM C-BRAINS organises several calls for tenders: one to recruit PhD students from the best foreign universities; another for the acquisition of shared equipment (such as intelligent cages to study the social behaviour of mice in ecological conditions or mini-microscopes to measure the activity of their neurons, etc.). Communicating with the general public is also one of the DIM’s major objectives, in particular to put an end to the confusion between the brain-machine interface and transhumanism: the aim here is first and foremost to restore cognitive functions in humans and to prevent or cure diseases. Conferences and videos produced by the DIM are part of this approach: research is essential to understanding the world and developing innovative therapeutic strategies. Funding research means funding the economy of tomorrow!
